Alamo 2009 Battle report
After some mild shenagins (for Ld2) on Thursday and Friday night, I am ready to kick off Alamo on Saturday morning.
Round 1 -Rob Caterman (VC)
Rob is a friend of Jordan Bruan and is from Virginia. Really good guy and was playing a hard, fighty VC list. We both asses the strengths of each other lists and spend the first two turns jockeying around trying to get an advantage with out creating an opening. These were some of the most tactical turns of Warhammer I have played. I had a series of small, unfortunate dice rolls (trolls go stupid and a miscast) happen that created an opening and Rob ruthlessly exploited it. Finally, Jordan sat down to watch and my knights proceed to charge an ghoul unit in the flank, inflict one wound, lose by one, break and are run down.
Rob is a hell of a player (got either 2nd best general or overall, can not remember).
4 point loss.
Round 2 - Empire Guy did not know what he was doing
Half way through my first turn of movement, he "redeploys" his caster to the other flank, saying he meant to do that. Whatever, I mercilessly pound him to dust.
20 point win
Round 3 - WOC list
All ogres, level 4 Tzetch sorcerer and 2 lvl 2 Nurgle, fast Cav, and 2 Hell Cannons. We trade snipe spells and have a very tactical game. Jordan and Rob come over to watch and I immediately miscast and my lord is sucked into the warp. I manage to get half points on all his characters and my Trolls finally man up and take down two units of Ogres, including some Khorne, and a Hell Cannon.
8 point Draw.
My two take aways at this point. I will never play this list without Infernal puppet again and Jordan Bruan is not allowed within 5 feet of me while I play Warhammer.
I have nice buzz going which I manage to ride through rum and tequila based drinks. I end up walking out of a Mexican restaurant at 2 am with my own Chalice of Ridiculous Confidence.
Round 4 Steve Chapman DE
Standard Guardstar list. Steve is unfun to play. Questioned every rule, suckered me into believing a complete misinterpretation of the skirmish rules that was game changing, slow played like a motherfucker, and lied about the victory points on the Hydra (I killed the Hydra, not the handlers. He picks up the book and says there is nothing in it about this situation, there is). Due to delays and such, the game lasted only 4 rounds.
At the end of turn 4 (when the game ended, did I mention slow play?), I had my knights ready to charge his cauldron, his guardstar engaged with big unit of Chosen in front, small in back, shrine in side. Everything was T5 or better. The Big unit has T5, 1+ Armor, and I was getting regen every round. My Sorcerer was not in contact due to clipping, so we was going to stay alive. I was winning every round of combat and grinding him down. I would have cast leper on the unit and with no magic defense, unless he could dispel a 10+ on two dice, the unit would be dead in three turns anyways.
12 point draw
Round 5 Mark -Lizzies
Mark was fielding 4 stegs (2 EoTG). Mark does not know what he is getting into since I can now fill my Chalice with beer (apparently you can not sell beer before noon on Sunday's in Texas!) He gets first turn and rumbles all four stegs in a tight formation down the middle of the table. Pretty awe inspiring sight. My redirectors survive just long enough to make sure he can never get a charge on a single unit with more then one Steg. I finally sink one EoTG with Quag, the trolls vomit on the other priest, ending his magic defense. By this point I have the 4+ ward and T5 on the Chosen and can get regen at will. Now I am ready to take on two stegs. Mark was a really good guy and took the dismemberment of his army in good stride, always staying up beat looking to have fun. I get a little greedy at the end and it costs me a battle point.
19 point Win.
I finish with a 2-1-2 record, had three really fun games and took a blood oath that I will take the puppet. I finish some where in the top 15 (not top 10 however L). Bailey and crew put on their usual smooth tournament and this remains my favorite out of state event.

Hey Michael, Rob here. Great
Hey Michael, Rob here. Great meeting you guys. Sorry you ended up with a couple of weak games. I had 5 excellent games, definitely made my first trip off the East Coast worth it. My opponents ended up 16-1-3 in the games they didn't play me, so it was 5 tough games. That's the way it should be at a GT. The Alamo is a great site, the Bailey's do an awesome job, and Texas has some Warhammer players.
Apparently California has a few, too. I'm gonna have to see if I can get a cheap flight to check out the "Original" beer wench. Might have to build up a few brownie points with my wife as well.
See you around, Puppetmaster. ;)
Love to have you
Rob-
I am looking forward to a rematch. Hope you can make it to QCR.
