Little help with Army Size

Hey Y'all

As most/some of you know I will be running the Iron Master warhammer tournament at Pacificon again this year.  I'm looking at changing the formate to a 4 round tounrament.  But to do that I will need to drop the round length to 1.5 hours.

My question to you, all you great Warhammer players, what size army works for a 1.5 hour game?

And second, whould that interest you.

Thanks for any and all feedback.

Doc

I probably wouldn't play in

I probably wouldn't play in anything <2000 points, and I don't think anything over 1,000 points would easily finish 6 rounds in 1.5 hours.

Derek

Why?

Why try to change the size to get more rounds in? Will that get you GW support? I ask because I would expect a change in army size if you are attempting a theme, like warbands, not just tying to get more rounds in.

You can add an extra round by making round 1 a General on General pitfight in 2 square feet of table, 15 minutes, 2 points for a win, 1 draw, 0 loss, and just use it to match first 'real' round opponents. =)

Perhaps you could do some kind of escalation thing?

round1 / 500 point warbands / 45 mins, slide one table left for quick transition to round 2

round2 / 1000 pts / 1:15

lunch

Round 3,4 / 2250 standard / 2hrs each

I think Derek is about spot

I think Derek is about spot on with the anything over 1k being hard to fit into 1.5 hours. When at Adepticon, there were even quite a few who were pushing the 1.5 hour mark with warbands (500pts), though not the majority.

I am curious why as well. Any reason not to make it a 2 day 5 game event at that point?

No Real Reason

Just a thought of somthing different.

In 2011 it may be a 2 day event, but not this year.

 I've gotta say Doc, although

I've gotta say Doc, although I applaud you for wanting to run a two day event and being willing to put all the work in that that requires, I doubt you'll get much LD2 support if you do that. We go to cons primarily to play boardgames and drink, so I doubt many people will want to dedicate both days of the con to playing in a tournament.

Roger that

I go to big tournaments for the 2-day WFB events. I go to cons to play a variety of games.

I'd be pissed if WFB was 2-days at Kubla or Pacificon... I want to play some of the other games gosh darn it! Dundra... well maybe. I dislike the organizers and their anti-wargaming (among other things) stance, so 2-days of minis might get me to go back there.

Pacificon

This year, if all goes well, I'll run my events as I've done the past 4 years.

In 2011, ConQuest is looking at moving Ragnorock to be at Pacificon.

This is not my idea, but the folks at Avalongames. (who own ConQuest GT's & Pacificon)

Wheather I help run the GT at Pacificon OR continue running my 1 day tournaments is up to me.

It's still too far out to really set any real meaning to any of this speculations.

*********

But I do thank you for the feedback on army size.  It is helpful.  In 40K, smaller games mean shorter rounds and more games, it dosen't seem to translate to Fantasy.  I'll keep it 3 games at 2250 this year.

What works best for LD2, a Saturday tournament or Sunday tournament?

Canvasing Ld2

Hey Doc-

I canvased Ld2.  It is about 80/20 in favor of having WFB tourney on Sunday.

I have also been thinking about our conversation about size and squezing a 4th game in.  I think you may need to put any decisions on hold until 8th edition comes out.  Some of those rumors seem like they may shorten the game (no wheeling, more models killed in combat, etc.).
